Meet your Neurospychologist
Brian Leahy, Ph.D., ABPP
I am a board certified Clinical Neuropsychologist with over 20 years of experience. I earned a PhD (Doctorate in both Clinical and Rehabilitation Psychology) at the Illinois Institute of Technology in 2001. I completed internship training specializing in neuropsychology at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center in Chicago, followed by a two-year fellowship in Clinical Neuropsychology at the University of Illinois – Chicago. Though I have been involved in various aspects of research and student training, my primary role since completing fellowship has been providing clinical neuropsychological evaluations for adults with concerns about their cognitive functioning.
The purposes of neuropsychological testing are wide-ranging. It can be helpful to detect and diagnose conditions such as Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Learning Disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorders, and Dementias. It can also be helpful in determining the impact of a known condition such as Concussion, Stroke, Brain Tumor, Multiple Sclerosis, or other
neurological issues. In addition, neuropsychological assessment can help to determine the reason for cognitive changes, when there is no known cause.
In my approach to neuropsychological evaluation, I believe that arriving at a diagnosis and identifying strengths and weaknesses are just the first steps. A critical part of the evaluation is providing relevant and useful recommendations to address problem areas and improve functioning. These might include medical or psychological treatments, targeted strategies to use one’s strengths to overcome weaknesses, specifying support needs related to managing responsibilities such as finances of medications, or accommodations at school or work.
If you or a loved one is experiencing difficulties with their cognitive functions, I can help to gain a better understanding of the reason for any cognitive issues and help start on the path to address them.
